Benefits And Drawbacks Of Led Lights On Boats

Modern boat builders are increasingly noticing the need to enhance their products to differentiate themselves in the marketplace.

12v LED boat lights are the standard equipment for lighting vessels. Not only are these lights more energy efficient than halogen lights and way ahead of incandescent, but emit less heat making them cooler. The bottom line is that accessories add more value to boats and differentiate them from the competition. For this reason, you should consider upgrading your boat lights to 12v LED boat lights.

The green effects are significant: LED lights draw 75 percent less power consumption than halogen lights for the same amount of illumination. With these, you use less power and burn less fuel. 12 volt LED boat lights are also cooler, and they emit less than a third of halogen lights. If you add a solar powered battery, you’ll go even greener.

New 12v marine lights and lamp fixtures have several benefits of traditional halogen, fluorescent and incandescent lights. Here are the major benefits of using LED lights:

• To achieve a certain level of brightness, LED lights use just about 10 percent of the power of standard halogen and incandescent lighting. For cruisers, it may mean less having to run the generator or motor.

• 12v LED wall lights last forever

• LED lights are not prone to damage caused by vibration or movement

• LED lights are not sensitive to humidity or temperature changes.

One notable drawback of using 12v LED lights for your boat is that they have a higher initial cost than traditional bulbs and fixtures. However, this cost will quickly become outweighed by energy savings over time as well as other benefits of LED lighting on boats.

The second disadvantage, which has now mostly been relegated to the past is that certain LEDs produced a tightly focused beam or harsh light rather than diffuse lighting when desired. Enhancements over time have now made LED lights with warmer and more diffuse lighting than incandescent lighting.

Whether you are planning to keep your current boat for some time and want to enjoy the limitless green benefits of 12v LED lights, or just like most high-end boat makers installing LEDs as standard equipment, LED is the most ideal choice.  You are looking to upgrade and distinguish the real value and green nature of your boat on the current market. And by the way, while you are breathing new life into your boat, installing 12v LED lights for your walls is a greener and certainly the best way to go.

These benefits are the reasons why you should consider installing LED lights.

LED lights for boats, yachts and other vessels are bright, cool and efficient. There are long-lived making them impossible not to like. 12v LED find yacht lights for your vessel can make navigation more than three times easier than conventional halogen lights. 12 volt LED lights are here to stay and although they cost more than conventional lights, they are certainly worth the purchase.

Here are some installation tips for LED boat lights.

Match the Old Lights

There are several LED light brands for boats. Find the right size match for your old incandescent light fixture, which will save you the patch job. If you can’t find the right match, get a larger footprint. Green and red navigation lights should meet coast-guard illumination requirements. Remove Old Lights

Remove all old fixtures; cut your negative and positive wires and inspect the remaining wires for chafing, corrosion and other damages. Replace any suspects with marine-grade wires for the entire run. Scuff off any gasket residue or old sealant on the mounting surface, being careful enough not to gouge out the finishing. Patch any holes that you can’t use and clean the mounting surface with acetone.

Wire the Fixture

Electrical wires for 12 volt LED boat lights often run through hard-to-reach areas in the bow, so it is very important to seal wires against corrosion and moisture. Coat stripped end of the wires with dielectric grease. Splice the pigtails of your LEDs to the power leads with crimp-on butt connectors that have heat-shrink collars. Use heat shrink tubing to cover the connection before using a heat seal gun to tightly seal it.

Position the Light

Using a single bicolor light, place your fixture on the bow pointing directly ahead and make sure the 12v LED lighting pattern is correct. Curving bows, bulwarks and separate sidelights can make a bit tricky to position. separate lights don’t need to be in the bow as long as they meet visibility requirements.

Mark and Drill Holes

Once your fixture is positioned properly, mark and drill the mounting holes. Try pre-fitting each mounting screw gently then removing it to ensure the hole remains of the right size.

Install the fixture

Most 12v LED boat and marine lights come as solid water-proof units. Gently install your LED lights using stainless steel, plastic or chrome-brass screws to complete installation. For more about installations, click here for 12v applications.

Quick Tip

If you don’t ensure adequate shielding, the LED switching circuitry may cause electromagnetic interferences which can result in static on VHF stereos and radios as well as “hash” on displays. Make sure that you LED lights clearly state that they shielded to satisfy EMI.
